High Country Inn News 2010

9/13/10 - OKTOBERFEST!

Saturday, October 16 will feature our homage to delicious German food and beverages, with our inn decorated in its autumn glory, and a buffet table laden with all the traditional dishes that everyone enjoys! We won’t be able to offer the lively program by the Whitten family this year, but we’ll certainly have some wonderful oom-pa-pa and polkas playing on our great Surround music system! You’ll be invited to enjoy your wonderful company and the food which I’ll lovingly create for your palate! There will be just one seating, with our doors opening at 5 pm, and dinner served around 6 o’clock. We hope you’ll get up a table and make reservations early (by October 11 if not before). We already have a table for ten, so it’s a GO for sure, and reservations will be limited . The menu will include cabbage rolls, Bavarian Pork Roast, applesauce, sweet and sour red cabbage, beef sauerbraten, mashed potatoes, gravy, salads, bratwurst and sauerkraut, rolls, and dessert. Price: $19.95 per person, plus tax and gratuity. No-host bar will include German and domestic beers, as well as a fine selection of wines.

November Event!

Our pre-Thanksgiving holiday event will be a Fall Fest, to be held Saturday, November 13, and will be a wonderful celebration of traditional holiday favorites as well as a special treat of entertainment by the dynamic Riendeau duo on piano and flute. Becky and Dennis Riendeau have performed for us several times over the last few years, but they have been too busy to come lately, so we feel really honored that they can fit us into their schedule ,not only for our Fall Fest, but will also return for next year’s Valentine’s weekend! We hope you will join us for our Fall Fest and share in the bounty of Jo’s favorite home-cooked dishes such as herb roasted turkey and all the trimmings, succulent tender and flavorful ham, and pork loin prepared with caramelized apples and onions. Homemade rolls and desserts will add to the array of salads and vegetables for a veritable feast! If you don’t have a houseful to feed this year for Thanksgiving, this feast will satisfy all your yearnings for these holiday favorites! Once again, our doors will open at 5 pm for this special fall event, and reservations are required.

6/28/10 - Our Annual Summer Event!

We would enjoy your company at our annual summer barbeque, on Saturday, July 10, here at the High Country Inn. The Sunken Garden will be shady, and blooming in all its summer glory! Tables outside, Mike Riccomini strumming his guitar and entertaining us, and a delicious and bountiful barbeque dinner ready to satisfy everyone’s palate! Please invite your friends for an evening of fun and relaxation, and reserve a table together! Complimentary snacks will be served beginning at 6:30, and a fine selection of beverages will be available on the outside deck. Dinner will be served around 7 pm, and guests may eat their fill. Price is just $36 per couple, or $18.95 for singles. This will be our single public event of the summer, so don’t miss it! It’s definitely summer now!! Call 476-7570, or e-mail for reservations please by Wednesday, July 7. Hope to see you on the 10th! Newcomers and out-of-town guests are always welcome!

Special Announcement!

We’ve just made arrangements with Kiwi Air of Lewiston/Clarkston to offer an exciting adventure for our guests as part of our annual summer barbeque! For a very special rate our guests will be offered the opportunity to take a fifteen-minute ride in Kiwi’s beautiful bright red helicopter, for a sight-seeing experience not to be forgotten, over Dworshak Lake and beautiful scenery surrounding the inn and nearby Orofino. This special price of just $35 person, or $70 per couple, will add so much to the evening’s excitement! The tours will begin promptly at 5:30 pm on Saturday, July 10, and last during the evening before and after the barbeque dinner. An extended social hour is being planned with complimentary cheese bar to allow time for guests to take this scenic ride. There is enough room in the copter to accommodate a third passenger, and reservations will be made for these tours on a first-come, first-serve basis as part of the evening’s event. Reservations for the flights may be made when dinner reservations are made. Kiwi Air is waiving the ferry fee for this special “Get-Acquainted” opportunity, and the High Country Inn feels very privileged to take part in several of their special packages to be advertised over the summer. Elopement and Romantic Getaway packages are also being formed to make a summer escape the ultimate in enjoyment!

Reservations for the Texas-style barbeque should be made as early as possible, with a deadline of Wednesday, July 7. The price for the full dinner and helicopter ride per couple is just $106!!

6/21/10 - Kick off the Summer Barbeque

I would still like to have our annual “Kick off the Summer Barbeque,” and Saturday, July 10 works for me (It MAY be summer by then!) if there are enough people interested in coming and enjoying our authentic Texas-style smoked brisket, boneless country ribs, chicken, and sausages. Plenty of sides, including salads, bread, and dessert will round out the menu, with the cost of $18.95 per person, $36 a couple. . We will begin taking reservations immediately, and we hope to have a nice crowd here to enjoy being outside for dinner. We are working on having some music to entertain us also. We will have our social hour outside beginning at 6 p.m. Get a table together and call or e-mail for your reservations!

The outdoor sunken garden is really lovely this year, my granddaughter, Kristina is here working for the summer, and we have added a lot of new plantings. She discovered a bird’s nest with baby birdies in one of the blue spruces adjoining the garden and is evening helping the[parent birds, finding worms as she plants! We plan on having our barbeque outdoors, and cross our fingers that the weather will be as beautiful as it was two weekends ago when we hosted a sell-out crowd for three evenings, with our library mystery dinner theater! That event was so successful that we plan on four nights next year to be able to accommodate everyone. Many thanks to all who attended and supported our library!

We’re booked for a busy summer of overnight guests, high school reunions, and other groups coming in for instructor courses, so we’re happy! Here’s wishing you a great summer and hope to see you at our barbeque on July 10! Jo

5/24/10 - Mystery Dinner Theater Drawing Near!

I’d like to thank those of you who have responded to my e-mail about our exciting mystery dinner theater being held for the Clearwater Memorial Public Library. As members of the board of the Library Friends, Cathy Jenni and I , with the help of others, are working really hard to make this event a huge success. It is a new venture for our little group, but we think it will be a fun and entertaining evening for all who attend. Play practice under the direction of Diane Hairston is going well, and we are very grateful to all the actors who are giving so much of their time for practice!

We are also proud to have some really nice raffle prizes, but are finding it hard to find a venue where we can get a lot of them sold. Right now the prizes are on display in the window of Fiesta en Jalisco Mexican restaurant downtown Orofino. If you would like to purchase tickets for either the raffle ($5 a ticket or 6 for $25) or reserve for one of the dinner nights of Friday or Sunday, you may call Cathy Jenni, 476-5914, and she will be happy to get tickets to you right away. Saturday night’s dinner tickets are all sold! Prices for the dinner and play are $40 singles, $75 for couples. It is not too late to sponsor a table, and that is $100 tax-deductible. Just let me or Cathy Jenni know, at 476-5914 if you would like to help us make this fund raiser for the library a success!

More dinner info:
Friday night begins at 6 pm with no-host bar, 7 pm dinner and beginning of play (Saturday the same)
Sunday evening begins at 5 pm no-host bar, dinner at 6 pm and beginning of play

No-host bar will be held on outside deck preceding dinner, with a nice selection of wines and beer, as well as sodas and iced tea for sale, along with complimentary cheese bar..
Choice of entrees: includes either stuffed pork loin, chicken breast Divan, or stuffed red pepper, (vegetarian ) To be ordered when buying tickets
Wine and beer will be available for purchase during dinner.
Tax is included, but gratuities will be gratefully accepted for our volunteer servers, with these going toward the library fundraiser.

We really hope you will help with this cause and talk it up with your friends!!

***Additional Note about High Country Inn! We didn’t get to schedule our annual barbeque for the first weekend of June as we usually do, because Dick and I are flying to Columbus, Ohio, to be there for our grandson Patrick’s high school graduation. We still hope to host our annual summer bbq, hopefully mid-July. More later!!

I am very excited about an upcoming major fund raiser for our local library, to be held the weekend of June 11, 12, and 13th here at the High Country Inn. The first Mystery Dinner Theater to be held in Orofino in about 30 years will be the event; I am donating the inn as well as the cooking to help this fund raiser along, the purpose is to start helping the library meet some major repair and maintenance expenses. The rest of the Clearwater Memorial Public Library (CMPL) Friends board and I have taken on this project and hope to make it an annual event! I wanted to let you know about it in case you would like to support it as well as have a fun evening. We have already sold several sponsored tables, and below is the information: Sponsored tables are $100, plus cost of the tickets for either a 4- or 8-person table. Tickets are $40 per person. The $100 is tax-deductible.

(Sponsored table for 8 is $420, sponsored table for 4 is $260) Tickets without a sponsorship are $40 per person, or $75 per couple. A limit of 40 tickets per evening will be pre-sold only. A choice of night and entrée will be made at time of purchase. Entrée choices: chicken breast Divan, Stuffed pork loin, or a vegetarian-gluten-free entrée of stuffed red pepper.

At this time, not many Saturday night tickets are left, but we are just starting to sell those for Friday, and an ample number remain for Sunday.

To purchase tickets or sponsor a table, you may call me at 208-476-7570 (You may even want to plan an overnight at the inn!)

A no-host bar will precede each evening’s play and dinner, with the following times: Friday and Saturday evenings: Outside bar opens at 6 pm, dinner and play at 7 pm. Sunday, outside bar at 5 pm, dinner and play at 6 pm. Wine and beer will also be available during the evening. We would like to get our allotment of tickets sold or reserved as soon as possible!

A word about the play: Director is Diane Hairston, who recently moved to Orofino with her husband Andy, and has a lot of experience in civic theaters in other areas. She will be directing a group of enthusiastic community members in this “who dunnit” mystery play, which will take place before and during the lovely dinner. Included in the cast are Jeff Jones, Carla Laws, Bobby Samuels, Ryan Smathers, Amanda and Dave Tucker, Will Weise and Pat Larson, Cherish Hinton, Phil Shriver, and Ted Leach.

We are also offering some wonderful raffle items, and winners need not be present to win. Volunteers will be at our library starting this week, for the next few Fridays to sell tickets, and the prizes are as follows:

A red leather Dooney and“Bourke handbag with accessories and $50 cash.
A deluxe overnight with dinner and breakfast at the High Country Inn
A set of hand-thrown blue and gray pottery by artist Bernadette Delallo, with large bowl and 8 smaller bowls, graduated in size
An insulated cooler on wheels, stuffed with gourmet picnic items

Raffle tickets are $5 each, or 6 for $25, and buyers may choose which prize they would like their tickets for.

If you cannot attend but would like to make a donation to the Clearwater Memorial Public Library, you may send a check to: CMPL Friends, P.O. Box 1813, Orofino, ID 83544

Hello to all and a beautiful early spring day to you!

We had a fine high tea on Sunday, which was a great finale to our 8th anniversary celebration all of February! We had lots of entries for our treat of a Romantic Getaway, and the drawing was held during our high tea. The lucky winner is Jerry Myers, who came to our Valentine’s dinner with his lovely wife, Rita. So congratulations to the winner, and thanks for all the interest in the drawing, as well as the attendance at our February events.

Coming up! St. Paddie’s Celebration with wonderful entertainment by Becky and Dennis Riendeau. Saturday, March 13, a full Irish dinner of corned beef and cabbage and trimmings, including carrots, onions, potatoes, a lovely salad, Irish soda bread and rolls, dessert, and beverage! We’ll gather at 6:30 for social time, dinner and entertainment before and after our meal. Call your friends, make up a table, and reserve soon. Cost of the dinner is $35 per couple, or $18 singles, plus tax and gratuity. We’ll be all decked out in green for good luck, and hope to see lots of you here on March 13!
